What Size Mattress Should My Child Be Sleeping On?

Kids. They grow up so fast. We are captivated when they say their first words and when they take their first steps and before we know it, they are suddenly ready to move from a crib or toddler bed to their very first “big kid” bed. Most children are ready to make this transition sometime between the age of 1 ½ and 3 ½. Whenever they do reach this milestone, we want to do our best as parents to make sure our little ones sleep both safely and comfortably in their new beds. At BedInABox®, we offer a variety of certified high quality, full size and queen size mattresses, mattress foundations, bed frames and other sleep accessories that can ease your little one’s transition while setting them up to sleep comfortably for many years to come.

Mattresses are an Investment

Beds and mattresses are no small investments, especially for children, and can often run hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It is important that parents make the best investment for their families, which is why BedInABox® recommends spending slightly more on a full size or queen size mattress for their child’s first standard size mattress, versus the typical transition to a twin size. The price difference isn’t huge. The BedInABox® Original twin size retails for $649, while the full size is priced at $799 and the queen size at $899. Essentially, you can buy a lot more bed for only $150 to $250 more. A twin size mattress measures only 75 inches long and 38 inches wide. In comparison, a full size is also 75 inches long, but measures 54 inches wide — a whole 16 inches wider — while a queen size is 80 inches long and 60 inches wide. Starting a child in a full size or a queen size bed will actually give him or her substantially more room to grow into over the years. In fact, it may even be more economical in the long run, when they outgrow a twin size bed and need a new full or queen size mattress.

Although there are several other mattress size options available, they may not be the best fit for children, your budget, or your home. Extra long twin mattresses, or Twin XL, measure slightly taller than a traditional twin size at 80 inches tall and 38 inches wide. Then there is king size at 80 inches tall and 76 inches wide and California king at 84 inches tall and 72 inches wide. While the Twin XL mattress offers extra length, the 38 inch width may become too narrow as children grow up. And as far as king sizes go, most kid rooms are not large enough accommodate a king size mattress, but they’re also the priciest mattress size available. For children, a full size or queen size are often the best choice in terms of mattress size and long term value.

Now, it’s normal to have some hesitation about spending so much on a child’s first real mattress when you know your child may still end up in your bed most nights. Children are also prone to be messy and sometimes even rough on things around the house. The good news is that BedInABox® mattresses are made to last. They are made entirely in the USA using quality memory foam that is developed under the same roof as the mattress itself. Your child’s new BedInABox® is durable, long lasting and comes with a 20 year limited warranty. The workmanship and quality of the materials used in any BedInABox® mattresses is guaranteed for the first 10 years.

Extend the Life of your Mattress

To prolong the life of your child’s new mattress, it is important to consider using a mattress protector, especially when spills and accidents are imminent. At BedInABox®, we also offer various sleep essentials that were designed to help extend the mattress’s life. A variety of stain resistant mattress protectors are ready to ship on our website and range from $39 to $230.

You may still be wondering if it really is possible to buy your little one a mattress that can last into their early adulthood. The answer is, yes, it is! BedInABox® mattresses are made from clean, high quality foam right here in the USA. Products naturally wear over time, even our high-quality memory foam and hybrid mattresses, but they were designed with durability and your best sleep in mind. So, if the mattress starts to feel less comfortable over the years, an easy and affordable way to renew your BedInABox® is to top it with a memory foam mattress topper. We currently offer four different toppers to supplement the comfort of a mattress as it compresses with age.
